Fantasy Pickups: Cash in on Canes Players

Every Monday, Third Line Grinder will be posting a Fantasy Pickups article so you can make some much needed free agent acquisitions. Generally we will recommend players that are owned in less than 50% of fantasy leagues according to Yahoo Sports.

Jordan Staal (Carolina) – C, LW – 19% Owned

As playoffs loom closer, now is the time to pick up players to prep for the final few weeks and try to take home some trophies at the end of the year. No team plays more over the last three weeks of the regular season than the Carolina Hurricanes. Staal has been hot with eight points in his last ten games. The Canes center is also known to put up hits, blocks, and penalty minutes which can make or break a fantasy team.

Sebastian Aho (Carolina) – LW, RW – 28% Owned

Continuing on the Carolina theme, rookie winger Aho is also a great option. The talented forward has a high ceiling, as he was putting up huge points in late January before the Canes began to slump. I expect that Aho and the Hurricanes will pick up again, so get Aho while he is still available.

Ryan Spooner (Boston) – C, LW – 10% Owned

As the Boston Bruins start to heat up, so is young star Ryan Spooner who has nine points in the last nine games with 3 goals and 6 assists. Spooner has been subject to some trade speculation as the deadline approaches, which puts a question mark over his future value, but as a Bruin, he is one of the best free agent pickups available.

Josh Morrissey (Winnipeg) – D – 2% Owned

Owned in only 2% of fantasy leagues, Josh Morrissey has flown under the radar this year, but is posting a promising rookie campaign. Averaging over 2.5 blocks per game and nearly 3 hits, Morrissey can be a big boost to your defensive core during playoff season
